Leprechaun

Leprechaun
Etymology

The word "leprechaun" comes from the Irish "leipreachán", defined by Patrick Dinninom * as "dwarf", "pygmy", "elf". According to most sources, the term is a distorted form of sredneirlandskogo ** "luchrupán", in turn descended from staroirlandskogo *** "luchorpán", where you can trace the roots of the combination "lú" (small) and "corp" (body).

Alternate spelling "leithbrágan" comes from the word "leith" (half) and "bróg" (brogue). This is due to the widespread image of leprechauns as a cobbler, working only with one (left) shoe.

English versions are writing "lubrican", "leprehaun" and "lepreehawn". Some modern Irish books use a form of "lioprachán".

In English, the term was first used in 1604 in the second part of the comedy Thomas Dekker's "The Honest Whore" (translation will not lead). In this work, one of the characters refers to the Irish shoemaker Brian lyubrikanom ("lubrican").

Folklore

The first known reference to the leprechaun appears in the medieval tale "Echtra Fergus mac Léti" ("The Adventures of Fergus, son of Fly"). In the text there is an episode in which Fergus, King of Ulster, falls asleep on the beach and after a dream finds itself at the bottom of the sea, where he dragged three leprechauns ("lúchorpáin"). As a result, Fergus caught the kidnappers, who promised to fulfill three wishes in exchange for freedom.

Leprechaun typically as isolated man living in establishing and repairing shoes. William Butler Yates **** saying that leprechauns found and appropriated potted treasures that were buried in the old days (in many sources I have encountered version of the riches of the Vikings at the time to raid the territory of Ireland).

Appearance

Leprechaun appearance depends on what part of Ireland they inhabit. Until the 20th century it was believed that these creatures are red instead of green clothing. In 1831, Samuel ***** Lauer wrote:

"... A lot of panache to the leprechaun outfit - red vest straight cut, richly decorated with gold braid, trousers to match, high hat and shoes with buckles

According to Yates, leprechauns wear red jackets, while the other creatures of the people are green fairy. The jacket leprechaun seven rows of buttons. Yates says that leprechauns living on the west coast of Ireland, have on his jacket lace and in Ulster this is narodec tall hats, and being in a mischievous mood, tends to jump the wall and spinning, balancing on the top of his hat.

"... The growth of about three feet (90 cm), wearing a red vest or short jacket, red pants to the knee, gray or black stockings
old-hat. Around his neck - fluted Elizabethan collar, lace ruffles around the wrists. "

On the wild west coast, where the Atlantic winds bring constant rain, leprechauns do without collars and lace. Instead, they wear wool coat over his red suit. So you can not learn the way you meet a leprechaun until you make out his tall hat.
